soil instincts

unraveling the soil mysteries!

college chemistry not required.

The USDA said back in the 40's that our agricultural lands were becoming depleted of minerals and nutrients that plants pass on to us. This affects the quality of our food, the nutrients it provides for us and requires that gardeners be aware of the practices that can help to rebuild or recondition the soil. Texture of soil is important because it gives room for oxygen and roots to grow. pH (acidity/alkalinity) is also important because a soil that is very acidic or alkaline will have its own specific issues. Soil in Albuquerque is highly alkaline in 9 out of 10 situations which also reduces biological activity, like exposure to extreme sun.

soil and the elements:

Moisture, sun exposure and make-up of the soil all work together to create a soil profile. Soil in the southwest has been hammered by intense solar rays over hundreds and thousands of years to intensify the mineral components. With dehydrated soil, biological activity is reduced which rapidly reduces its fertility. It is difficult to overstate the power of the sun to deplete organics as it does also revitalize living things. Mulching and stimulating activity through composted material are the ways to give back to Mother Nature. It is very possible to renovate the worst soil with modest materials and some patience. Search 'sheet mulching' online to research the theory in-depth.
